James Meehan
A most excellent surveyor Tony Dawson James Meehan put Australia on the map, literally! Exiled to NSW for his part in the build-up to the United Irish Rebellion of 1798, he spent 1803-1820 surveying and mapping thousands of land grants and leases in the settled districts of Sydney, Parramatta and Hobart as well as exploring up and down the east coast to the Port Phillip District that became the colony of Victoria and across Bass Strait to Van Dieman's Land.
Confidant and friend of Governor Lachlan Macquarie, he was a modest and unassuming official. Settlers and officers knew and respected him, and he knew the land better than all of them. Pioneer farmer and entrepreneur, he was also family man and pillar of his church.
